We have all been there before no matter our age. Kids and adults alike can relate to Alexander. We all remember a day like his terrible, Horrible, No Good, VERY BAD day! This is a great book to introduce concepts such as validation and perspective to children; just because it is a bad day that doesn’t mean it is a bad life. Judith Viorst does a great job at reminding readers that just because today may have been rough, tomorrow is a new day with a fresh start.
The book is also great at introducing calming and coping skills, and at teaching empathy for Alexander and those in our lives who might not be having a good day. For adults it is a reminder that perspective matters – what may seem to be little and trivial to adults are often big and important in the eyes of the little ones around us. It is important to validate the big emotions the little ones (and even the big ones) in our lives feel rather than dismiss the feelings as not important. Emotional regulation, or the ability to manage one's emotions is something that can be taught beginning in infancy with co-regulation from caregivers and continued through adulthood.
Themes: Communication, Coping Skills, Developing Empathy, Developing Perspective, Parenting, Self-Esteem, Validation, Emotional Regulation
