Summary: Wilfrid Gordon MacDonald Partridge is the story of Wilfrid and his friends at the old persons home next door. Wilfrid’s favorite friend there is Miss Nancy, who has "lost her memory." Wilfrid doesn't know what a memory is, but in discovering the meaning of the word, he helps Miss Nancy recover some of hers. This is a sweet story of friendship, creativity, and generativity.

This is a great story that can be used in multiple ways with children and teens. It is great to use with kids who are developing social skills and learning to enjoy reciprocal friendships. Before reading the story together, review basic social skills like making eye contact, asking questions about what others are interested in, not interrupting others, etc. Then, as you read the story, point out the social skills demonstrated by Wilfrid and Nancy.

Additionally, this story can be used with children who have a loved one, neighbor, or friend who is experiencing their own memory loss; such as through dementia, Alzheimer's, or an injury. Wilfrid learns not only what a memory can be, but shows empathy and compassion in his journey to help Miss Nancy find her lost memory. Adults in a child's life can discuss the child's lived experiences throughout the story, asking the child what they might remember for their own warm, precious memories or how they might be able to be present and considerate for their own friend with memory loss.

Helping children to develop social skills or understanding memory loss can become easier when using this great picture book. Our therapists at Cottonwood Counseling & Coaching are also helpful when a grown up isn't sure the best way to help a child they love. Reach out to 801.513.1780 for an initial consultation!
